Quick Confidence Techniques

Very few of us feel confident all of the time, so you’re not alone. 

Confidence is being sure of yourself and your capabilities.  It is not about feeling as though you are better than others.  It is about feeling secure in yourself and what you are able to do.

Sometimes this is easier to do than other times.  For example, when you are being given praise for doing something well, you feel confident.  But when things go wrong, we criticise ourselves and our confidence goes down.  The problem is, it is easy to doubt ourselves and let criticism reduce our confidence.

If you feel that you need a quick confidence booster, here are some techniques to help you.


stand tall


When you slump, look at the floor, hang your shoulders and head, it tells everyone that you lack confidence and it reinforces to yourself that you lack self-esteem.

On the other hand, standing tall shows everyone that you are confident (even if you don’t feel it at that moment).  And the amazing thing is the more you stand tall, the more you will feel it on the inside.

So put your shoulders down and back, look up and stand straight. 

Try it for a day and see how different you feel.




walk faster


Psychologists have linked how people walk to how others view them. 

A sluggish slow walk shows that the person has no confidence in themselves, that the world has beaten them and they don’t care any more.

A walk that is slightly faster than average with a sprint in the step tells the world that the person has a purpose, has somewhere important to go and they will succeed.

So try standing tall with your head up while walking a bit faster and see what happens to your confidence.




speak up


When you don’t feel confident, the easy option is to stay quiet, to not get involved in class discussions, and to hold back in groups.  

You may think that your opinion doesn’t matter, that you don’t want to say anything wrong or that you might make a fool of yourself.  But every time you fail to speak up, you will feel less able to next time.  Every time you fail to speak up, your confidence will shrink further away and the harder it will get.

Make a promise to yourself that you will speak up once in every discussion.  Just once.  Make a comment, ask a question, or suggest something and see how your confidence grows.  Every time you do speak up, will make it easier to do it next time.  Every time you speak up will be a confidence booster.






When we doubt ourselves, we focus on our weaknesses which makes us feel as though we can’t do things.  And when you focus on what you think you can’t do, it reduces your confidence.  

We all have weaknesses, but those who seem to be brimming with confidence, focus on what they can do rather than what they can’t do.

So, write down 5 things that you are good at.  It can be anything from being a good friend, to being good at maths.  Or maybe you are a talented dancer or great at a sport.  Maybe you are a good listener, fabulous at organising things, or creative.  If you are struggling to think of your strengths, don’t be afraid to ask others what they think are your strengths – you will probably be surprised at how others see you.

Whenever you start feeling as though you can’t do something or start thinking about what you can’t do, stop and remind yourself what you can do and what your strengths are. 

Know and use your strengths to increase your confidence.  




Take Action

Taking action cures fear and increases confidence.  The more that you succeed at, the more you know what you can do and the more you will feel able to do.

Take small steps, but take action.  Challenge yourself to do something outside your comfort zone.

Join a new club, speak to someone new, change your hairstyle, start a new hobby, smile at a stranger.

The more you do, the more confident you will be.  You can’t move forwards without taking that first step, so take a step towards confidence today.
